Nikon Europe BV’s Business-Critical Workload
Nikon is one of the world’s leading suppliers of products and solutions based on advanced optoelectronics and precision technologies. It is also famous for its cameras and binoculars for which it has an e-commerce platform serving 21 countries in Europe and includes the ‘Nikon DealerNet’ (B2B) and the ‘Nikon Stores’ (B2C).
The ‘Nikon DealerNet’ provides critical product and pricing information in real-time, shipment tracking, order management, etc., to B2B dealers across Europe. The ‘Nikon Store’ enables direct interaction with the Nikon brand, where consumers could purchase products, review them and get after-sales support. But hosting these Business-Critical workloads on SAP Hybris on an on-premise data center was driving up costs and resulting in numerous challenges for Nikon Europe BV.

The Opportunity to Modernize and Save Costs
Nikon Europe BV’s goal was to reduce the high infrastructure costs associated with their Oracle database license and the base infrastructure in the on-premise data center. They were also facing scaling, performance, and reliability issues, and platform maintenance had become a hassle due to dependencies on external vendors. Additionally, they did not have any reusable assets for future re-platforming.
Mindcurv modernized the Nikon Europe BV platform by migrating it from SAP Hybris on an on-premise data center to the AWS Cloud. Our goal was to minimize the overall infrastructure cost and create a future-ready platform for Nikon Europe BV by migrating all the components & services (prod and non-prod environments) and integrating external services with the AWS Cloud environment.
Migrating to AWS Cloud has already saved 35% in costs for Nikon Europe BV and improved flexibility, performance, scalability, and reliability.
Migrating to the AWS Cloud
Mindcurv closely examined Nikon Europe BV’s existing infrastructure, deployment processes, monitoring and alerting frameworks. We drew up a migration strategy and roadmap that aligned closely with their goals. The global footprint, high availability, and the pay-as-you-use model made AWS Cloud the clear choice for increasing the reliability and performance of Nikon Europe BV’s Business-Critical workloads. The demand-based auto-scaling and elastic load balancing provided by the AWS Cloud were additional advantages. Our ‘Lift and Reshape’ followed the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP).
Since most of Nikon Europe BV’s systems were on Oracle Database, we used the fully managed Amazon RDS service to set up, operate, and scale the oracle deployments in the cloud. This eliminated the Oracle license cost for Nikon Europe BV. We also moved their high-value applications into individually scalable persistence stores on AWS, further optimizing costs. Mindcurv automated the CI/CD pipelines and deployed infrastructure as code, ensuring speed, simplicity, and consistency while provisioning additional infrastructure. We also introduced new cost-effective SaaS solutions for centralized monitoring and logging, providing better platform observability.
“
Our new AWS cloud-based digital platform is more reliable and scalable and going to be key to our future growth. It has already proven to be cost-effective and has helped us become more agile and flexible.

A Modern Platform Geared for Growth
Mindcurv’s migration of the platform to AWS Cloud has already saved 35% in costs for Nikon Europe BV. We were also able to optimize resource utilization and increase the observability and flexibility of the platform. The platform’s reliability and scalability were immediately improved, and application response time was reduced. Mindcurv continues to steer modernization efforts for Nikon Europe BV on both application and infrastructure levels, and further cost optimization activities are in the works.
