Schmalz Needed to Migrate from Magento
Schmalz, a market leader in automation for vacuum technology and ergonomic handling systems, launched their latest version of the online shop in 2016. They sold spare parts, automated labor-intensive and manual processes, and offered customer self-service options, through their online shop.
Schmalz had been using Adobe’s Magento 1 to run its e-commerce shop. But with Adobe announcing the end of support for the commerce platform, Schmalz wanted to know their options. And this is where Mindcurv stepped in.

An Opportunity to Modernize
Schmalz’s vision was to rapidly grow the online business and expand into new markets. The existing platform on Magento 1 was not ideal to support this. Schmalz’s future growth plans needed modern features like IoT integration and scalability while keeping an eye on cost and maintainability. With the end of support for Magento, security vulnerabilities and diminished user experience were sure to become major concerns. From the get-go, the need for a modern e-commerce platform was evident to Mindcurv.

commercetools and Bloomreach: The Modern E-Commerce Platform
Mindcurv partnered with Schmalz to explore its online growth potential and recommended a new platform based on commercetools and Bloomreach, running on AWS. Factors such as cost, security, support, scalability, IoT integration, and a more flexible CMS were considered. Mindcurv built the new cloud platform and set up the infrastructure that would be able to act as the foundation for realizing all of Schmalz’s growth needs. Following best practices to optimize platform performance, it was designed based on microservices, API first, and headless principles and runs on modern, secure, scalable, and performing architecture and cloud-based infrastructure. Mindcurv advocates MACH technologies as the modern approach to digital platforms. All of the content was migrated from the existing Magento 1 and TYPO3 setup.
Mindcurv also took charge of the platform maintenance and evolution to ensure more relevant content and new features on the platform, in line with the latest practices and user needs. The shift from a Magento architecture to a microservices architecture on commercetools and AWS gives Schmalz greater business agility.
“
Our new commercetools and Bloomreach based digital platform is key to our future growth and at the same time helps us to gain more agility and flexibility as a fast-growing, global business.
